IFI / RICKY BYRDSONG AWARD
2005
Carlos Burns
Carlos Burns,
father of
two children, teaches in the Special Education/History Department
and coaches football at Harlan Community Academy high School. He was
recognized for being
one of the top coaches in the country because of the work he does with
and through the
Play it Smart Program. He is a member of his church choir and instills a
sense of the importance
of spirituality into the lives of the children with whom he comes in
contact. Carlos has taught the importance of education to his football
team members resulting in a team of academically eligible athletes, who
attend classes, do their homework, prepare for exams, earn excellent
grades, and participate in community services projects. He does not
teach, coach, or volunteer for any type of recognition, but for the
satisfaction of influencing a child to truly take his or her life and
make the
most of it.
Illinois Fatherhood Initiative presented Carlos Burns with the 2005 IFI / Ricky Byrdsong Award.
